Metal Laser Cutting

Metal laser cutting is a process in which sheet material is cut using a focused laser beam. In the cutting zone, the metal is heated and melted, while an assist gas removes the molten material from the cut. Fiber lasers are most commonly used for metal processing and work effectively with carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and copper.

The technology is suitable for producing flat parts with complex contours, including plates, brackets, flanges, panels, decorative elements, and blanks for bending or welding. Cut quality depends on the material, sheet thickness, assist gas, equipment power, and the requirements for the finished part.

  • Laser cutting is most commonly used for sheet metal parts made from standard structural steel, including brackets, plates, flanges, enclosure components, and blanks for bending and welding.

Metal Laser Cutting: Tolerances and Standards

  • For sheet metal laser cutting, a typical tolerance is around ±0.1 mm. Actual accuracy depends on material thickness, material grade, contour length, thermal deformation, and drawing requirements.

  • Laser cutting kerf width is typically around 0.1–0.4 mm. It depends on sheet thickness, metal type, laser power, beam focus, and the assist gas used during cutting.

  • After laser cutting, the edge is generally clean and suitable for subsequent bending, welding, or painting. Thicker materials may show scale, slight taper, or burrs that can be removed with additional finishing.

  • ISO 9013 is used to evaluate the quality of thermal cutting of metals. The standard covers edge perpendicularity, surface roughness, contour deviation, and cut quality.

Laser Cutting: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Small orders are typically completed within 1–3 business days. Serial batches, thicker materials, or orders requiring additional operations may take longer.

  • The main factors are material type, metal thickness, total cutting length, number of parts, and batch size. Thicker material and more complex geometry generally increase manufacturing costs.

  • The most commonly laser-cut materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, brass, and copper. The feasibility of cutting a specific material depends on its thickness and the required edge quality.

  • Laser cutting provides higher accuracy, a narrower kerf, and better edge quality. Plasma cutting is typically used for thicker metal when high precision is not critical.

  • For most parts, an accuracy of around ±0.1 mm can be achieved. The actual tolerance depends on the material, sheet thickness, and part geometry.

  • Yes. Laser cutting is suitable for both one-off parts and serial production. The minimum order quantity depends on the specific manufacturer and material.
